Old Krystal site serves new Greek flavors
LUNCH BUNCH
Regional editorial assistant Victoria Aldrich and Your Money editorial assistant Susan Irwin recently shared lunch at the new Dimitri’s Artisan Sandwiches, Soups and Salads in South Daytona.
Q. What do they serve?
Located at the former Sunshine Park Krystal site, this sunny restaurant has patrons ordering burgers, sandwiches, gyros, salads and fried seafood at the counter for both restaurant and takeout service. Sides include soup, fries, hummus and potato salad. From 4 to 10 p.m., the dinner menu includes moussaka, pastitsio, and several types of pasta. No alcohol is served.
Q. What did you eat?
Owner Dimitri Bourtzakis told us that when the gods got hungry they went to Greece, and they obviously had great taste.
Susan ordered the “Made Guy” sandwich, with salami, turkey, ham, capicolla, mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, red onion, roasted red peppers and a garlic spread.
Victoria’s spinach pie combo included a delicious Greek salad with a sweet dressing instead of the usual sour vinaigrette. The Greeks call their spinach pies “spanakopita,” but they really should call them “insulator wraps.” Twenty minutes after she cut into it, it was still piping hot, so she saved it for later. Both the salad and pie tasted just as fresh the next day as leftovers.
Just one suggestion: Serve lemon wedges with the iced tea.
Q. How was the service?
Excellent. Both times Victoria visited this place, it has been filled with customers, yet the help could not be any friendlier or more accommodating.
Q. What was the tab?
It was $20.03 for two combos and two drinks.
